Laura Hoehn, Career & College Readiness Coordinator
What might seem like three different career paths—educator, marketer and counselor—Laura
Hoehn has melded into one. She puts skills from all three disciplines to work in her role as coordinator of the Livingston Career & College Access Network.
After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood development from Western
Michigan University, Laura taught 5th grade in South Redford Schools for eight years.
Career readiness has always been a theme in her teaching, and in hands-on projects, her
young entrepreneurs learned it was never too early to think about their future.
While she was raising her two small children, Laura worked in sales and marketing for Crayola
Crayons, the “Big Yellow Box” people. Working outside of education gave her a new perspective
into the business world.
Laura’s next step was to earn a master’s degree in counseling from Eastern Michigan University,
working as a graduate assistant to pay for much of her schooling. Her next position was
at Whitmore Lake High School, where she helped develop a career and technical education
partnership with Livingston County schools. The change she saw in students’ career
direction after they completed a work experience program underscored her belief in the
value of real-world learning.
At the Livingston Career & College Access Network, Laura continues to wear many hats
as she connects local employers and schools to prepare students to fill the skilled, technology-
driven jobs of the future.
